Were you surprised when you got yours?

It surprises me that more people aren't blogging about inSPOT. At least I thought there would be some bloggers out there willing to write about receiving an inspot e-card. I guess that's also the beauty of it... if you get one of these puppies, no body has to know.

Spread the word folks. Take care of your hookups with many different cards to choose from. Telling them in person, or even testing together may be good choices too (right?), but if you have a lot of anonymous sex that just may be impossible.

Bible Thumped

Baby? I doubt it-->
Finally, someone is using the bible to defend stem cell research! See October 19th's New England Journal of Medicine for this free access article about stem cell politics. "I find nothing in the Bible that tells me that cells in a lab dish are people," says Republican Senator John Danforth. "What I do find in the Gospels is an emphasis on healing -- relieving people of their suffering."
I don't exactly 'believe' in the bible, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it the next time I cross paths with any godloving naysayers.

HPV Vaccine pushed along in CA

If passed, California bill AB 16, will require that all girls be vaccinated for HPV before entering the sixth grade, unless their parents file a letter stating that the vaccine is against their beliefs. The bill, introduced by Assembly Speaker Sally Lieber (D), does not seek funding to cover the cost of the vaccine however. While that's a bit unsettling (the thing costs over 350 bucks) a lot more kids would be staying home if the other mandated vaccines (measles, mumps, etc.) required taking out a small loan. So, I actually doubt that once this is all rolled out parents/guardians will have to eat the cost.

That said, I totally support efforts to vaccinate all 12 year old girls. Funny to me however, is that most of the other vaccines on the required-for-school list are there for a very similar (and good) reason: they are EASILY transmitted kid to kid (and not by kids having sex with one another). I say that, not because I think the vaccine is the perfect subliminal messages telling all 12 year olds to go boinking around (no evidence of that with hepB vaccines), but b/c it's a lovely shift towards longer term prevention in schools.

For the future, I'd like to see boys covered as well. We didn't kick measles or polio by vaccinating half of everyone.

Read this bioethics blog for a great critique of the NEJM's latest about HPV, "The Ethics and Politics of Compulsary HPV Vaccination."

Jerk off to NPR or Kenny G with OHMIBOD

Okay, now you can have a vibrator that plugs into your ipod and buzzes away to the tune of whatever you're listening to. It seems like if you are going to be stealth about the whole thing (somehow I keep picturing BART riders tickling themselves on their morning commute) the things should be a different shape...like one of those little butterfly vibrators that hug the goods a little closer.

The website is a bit cheesy...okay maybe a lot cheesy.

I think this will be a popular holiday gift. What do you think?

Misconceptions about sex? Jeez

A global sex survey found that having more partners was more often mentioned in industrialized countries where STI rates are lower. So it seems that poverty and education access, not promiscuity, may be stronger indicators of sexual health. Personally though, I think this report downplays the importance of sexual networks.
Learn more about sexual networks here, or read anything by John Potterat, who is unfortunately retired.
